Chinese Dogwood

Tiny green flowers in June, surrounded by large, tapered, creamy white, flower bracts, fading to red-pink. This broadly conical Chinese dogwood is renowned for its dark green leaves which turn crimson-purple in autumn. An excellent specimen tree for a small garden or woodland edge, the leaf colour is best in fertile, well-drained, neutral to acid soil.Position: full sun to part shadeSoil: fertile, humus-rich, well-drained, neutral to acid soilRate of growth: slow-growing to averageFlowering period: JuneFlower colour: creamy white bractsOther features: on mature plants the flowers are followed by strawberry-like fleshy fruit, which may cause a mild stomach ache if ingestedHardiness: fully hardy Garden care: Incorporate a quantity of composted pine needles or well-rotted leaf mould when planting.
